Capturing Winter Bliss: A Family Photography Session with the Blanchard's and Their Horses

Winter on a farm offers a unique charm that few settings can match. Crisp air, soft light, and the quiet beauty of nature create the perfect backdrop for family photography sessions. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing the Blanchard family during a casual winter session on their farm. Baby Annie and three-year-old Jackson brought warmth and joy to the chilly day, while the family’s horses added a special touch along the fence line. Using my new Canon R6 Mark II and a strobe light to enhance the natural light, I captured moments that reflect the simple happiness of life on the farm in winter.

Setting the Scene: Winter on the Farm

Winter transforms a farm into a quiet, peaceful place. The snow blankets the ground, softening sounds and creating a clean, bright canvas. For the Blanchard family, this season is a time to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of farm life. The farm’s rustic fences, bare trees, and the gentle presence of horses made an ideal setting for portraits that feel natural and heartfelt.

The cold air encourages cozy clothing choices, which add texture and color to the images. Baby Annie’s soft knit hat and Jackson’s warm sweater contrasted beautifully with the white snow and the earthy tones of the farm. These details help tell the story of a family connected to their land and animals, embracing the season together.

Using New Gear to Enhance the Session

This session was a great opportunity to test my new Canon R6 Mark II. The camera’s fast autofocus and excellent low-light performance made it easy to capture sharp, vibrant images despite the dim winter light. The farm’s natural light was soft but limited, so I brought along a strobe light to add subtle highlights and balance shadows.

The strobe light helped me maintain the ambient feel of the scene while ensuring the family’s faces were well-lit and expressive. It was especially useful when the horses moved closer to the fence, creating dynamic compositions with natural backdrops. The combination of natural and artificial light gave the photos a warm, inviting quality that matched the family’s relaxed mood.

Capturing the Children’s Natural Moments

Photographing young children outdoors can be unpredictable, but it also brings out genuine expressions and spontaneous interactions. Baby Annie’s curiosity and Jackson’s playful energy made the session lively and fun. Instead of forcing poses, I let them explore the farm, interact with family members, and enjoy the winter day.

Including the Horses in the Portraits

The horses were more than just background elements; they became part of the family story. Their calm presence along the fence invited interaction and added depth to the portraits. Photographing them required patience and timing.

Tips for a Successful Winter Family Session on a Farm

  • Dress for warmth and texture: Layers, hats, scarves, and boots add visual interest and keep everyone comfortable.

  • Use natural elements: Incorporate fences, trees, and animals to create authentic, meaningful portraits.

  • Bring additional lighting: A strobe or reflector can enhance ambient light without overpowering the scene.

  • Be patient with children and animals: Let them move freely and capture candid moments.

  • Choose the right gear: Cameras with good low-light performance and fast autofocus help capture fleeting expressions.

Reflecting on the Session

This winter session with the Blanchard family was a reminder of how powerful simple moments can be. The combination of a beautiful farm setting, the warmth of family bonds, and the presence of animals created images full of life and emotion. Using new equipment like the Canon R6 Mark II and a strobe light allowed me to bring out the best in the natural environment and the family’s interactions.

For anyone considering a family portrait session in winter, embracing the season’s unique qualities and being prepared with the right tools can make all the difference. The Blanchards’ session shows how casual, relaxed moments can turn into lasting memories when captured thoughtfully.

If you want to create your own winter family portraits, consider visiting a farm or rural setting where nature and animals add character. Experiment with lighting to balance the soft winter sun, and focus on capturing genuine connections. These photos will become treasured reminders of a special time spent together.
