Celebrating This Year's Canola Sessions

Every summer, I look forward to canola season.

There's something about those endless fields of yellow, the warm Alberta evenings, and the excitement families have when they arrive for their session. It's one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the year for Sterling Photography & Marketing, and this season was no exception.

This year's canola crop wasn't without its challenges. Weather conditions made the season shorter and less predictable than usual, leaving many people wondering if the blooms would even be worth planning around. Thankfully, Mother Nature gave us just enough beautiful evenings to create some incredible memories.

I'm so grateful to everyone who booked a session this year.

Over the course of the season, I had the opportunity to photograph growing families, couples, graduates, branding sessions, children, and even a few creative model sessions that allowed me to try new ideas and expand my portfolio. Every session had its own story, and that's what I love most about photography. No two evenings are ever the same.

One thing I heard over and over again was, "We're awkward in front of the camera." My goal has always been to make those worries disappear. I guide every pose, encourage movement instead of stiff smiles, and create an environment where genuine moments naturally happen. By the end of each session, most people tell me how much fun they had, and I think the photos speak for themselves.

This season also pushed me creatively. I experimented with new compositions, different lighting techniques, and ways to capture more authentic emotion. Every year I strive to improve, and I feel this year's galleries truly reflect the style I've been working toward: timeless, true-to-color images that let people and relationships remain the focus.

To everyone who trusted me with your family's memories, your engagement, your graduation, or your business branding - thank you.

Although the canola blooms only last for a few short weeks, the photographs will last for generations.
