Celebrating an incredible day of breakaway roping, horsemanship, and the people behind it

On July 25, I had the privilege of photographing the Alberta Ladies Breakaway Roping Finals, bringing together talented competitors for a full day of fast runs, great horses, and some seriously exciting moments in the arena.

There is something special about photographing breakaway roping. Everything happens incredibly quickly, but behind those few seconds in the arena are countless hours of preparation, practice, horsemanship, and determination. Being able to document those moments for the competitors and their families was an honour.

Behind the Scenes with the Sterling Team

This year's finals were also a milestone for SPM.

For the first time, we attended with a dedicated three-person event team focused on creating a smoother and more enjoyable experience throughout the day.

While I remained in the arena photographing every run, my assistant worked behind the scenes, keeping images organized and edited throughout the day so competitors could stop by our preview station and see their photos while the event was still happening.

At the same time, our videographer was focused on capturing the competitors who had pre-ordered video coverage, preserving their runs in motion as another way to remember the finals.

It was a day full of teamwork, both in and out of the arena.

One of my favourite parts was seeing competitors and their families gather around the preview screen between runs. There is something pretty great about photographing a moment in the arena and then, not long afterward, watching the person in that photograph see it for the first time.

A huge thank you to the organizers, volunteers, competitors, families, and everyone else who made the finals possible.

And, of course, congratulations to every competitor who backed into the box that day.

Whether it was a personal-best run, a championship moment, a young horse gaining experience, or simply another day spent doing something you love, I'm grateful that our team was there to document a piece of it.
